Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS)
The Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) enables deaf and hard of hearing people in Barnet to have access to social care services. This service can be used for social care appointments such as home visits, meetings with social services staff and social care events. This SLIS service does not cover health appointments - the NHS have their own interpreting service.
The service is only free for social care appointments and for all people who use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language and who live in the borough of Barnet.
In addition to BSL and English interpreters, the Sign Language Interpreting Service also provides the following communication support:
- Sign Supported English (SSE)
- deafblind interpreters (Manual)
- speech to text reporters (Palantypists)
Sign Video Service at Barnet House
If you are deaf or hard of hearing, a self-service video / telephone link at Barnet House could help you.
The computer-based facility is called Sign Video and provides BSL interpreters through the use of video-conferencing equipment, saving the need for you to arrange another future appointment if you are unable to hear. You can use the service to interpret a conversation you are having with a hearing member of staff. The service is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (except bank holidays).
