Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

  • Business

Food Hygiene Ratings can help you to decide where to shop or go out for a meal.

Check that a restaurant, takeaway or food shop has good levels of food safety by viewing food hygiene ratings

What is the Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme?

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps you choose where to eat or shop for food. It gives you information about hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs, cafés, takeaways, hotels and other places you are served with food to eat, as well as supermarkets and other food shops.

The  Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme is operated by the Food Standards Agency and delivered by Councils. Our team carry out inspections of food businesses in Barnet to check levels of safety and hygiene. After inspections, a food hygiene rating between 0 and 5 is given, where 5 is very good. Most food businesses are part of the scheme, but some very low risk  businesses may be exempt, for example a newsagent selling only wrapped sweets. Some of these businesses are still listed, but will show as ‘exempt’ from the scheme.

Request a re-visit

You can request a re visit where your business will be assessed for a new rating at any time after your inspection. Before you request a re-visit you should take action to rectify any non-compliance(s) identified at the time of inspection.
