Construction, DIY, delivery noise
Major construction sites can cause significant levels of noise. Construction works include the demolition, maintenance, repair, erection, construction of buildings and any work of engineering construction. Much of this noise is unavoidable due to the nature of the work. The Control of Pollution Act 1974 gives the Environmental Health special powers to control noise on construction and demolition sites.
Permitted hours of work
The permitted hours of work when noise can be audible at a construction site boundary are:
- Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
- Saturday, 8am to 1pm
- Sunday and Bank Holidays, no work allowed
Any noisy operations outside these hours cannot be undertaken without prior approval of the department and permission is only granted in exceptional circumstances eg emergency works.
Deliveries and waste removal
Commercial premises often need deliveries or waste removal to take place at quieter times of the day.
Deliveries or waste removal should not take place between 11pm and 6am.
If these are taking place between these times, then reasonable efforts should be made to minimise the noise. If a resident is being disturbed between 11pm and 6am, we will make an assessment as to whether a nuisance is being caused.
When undertaking DIY, we recommend you give advance warning of any work being carried out to your neighbours so they can be prepared.
We recommend that noisy DIY is carried out between the following hours:
- Monday- Friday, 8am- 8pm
- Saturdays, 8am-6pm
- Sundays and Bank Holidays, 10am-4pm
If working in the evening, we advise that noisy work be done at the start of the evening.
Work that is not audible outside the premises can continue beyond the recommended hours.
