Future of the borough
Barnet is a desirable place to live and work, and we want to keep it that way. The excellent quality of our schools, our green open space and our strong local economy are all crucial parts of what makes Barnet so popular.
Barnet already has the biggest population in London and over the next 10 years our population will grow. That’s why we’re investing in the things a growing borough needs – like more housing and school places, better transport networks, and more local leisure and community facilities – enhancing what needs to be improved while making sure we are managing development responsibly and protecting what people love in the borough.
Our growth and development plans will create over 20,000 new homes and up to 30,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. We’re also revitalising our biggest housing estates so that all our residents can live in modern, decent quality accommodation.
As important as a decent place to live is a quality place to learn, which is why we want every Barnet child to have access to schools that are among the best in the country. We’re proud of the fact that, since 2009, over 7500 extra school places have been created across the borough. It’s not every local area that can make a claim like that. See more about schools in Barnet and find out how to apply for a place.
A strong local economy is important for an area to prosper. To make this a reality, we are focusing on making Barnet the best place in London to be a small business, for example by making business transactions with the council easier, and on supporting our town centres to thrive by providing businesses with access to high speed broadband and teams of local experts.
