Get stuck in
Why not take a look at the opportunities you can get involved in below and if you haven't already, take our fun quiz to find out what opportunities would suit you best.
Join Team Barnet!
Team Barnet offers one-off event volunteering opportunities that are exciting, fun and fulfilling, with all the advantages of volunteering, without needing to make a regular commitment. The events will give you the chance to meet and learn about new organisations, make new friends, learn new skills and to help a number or projects and causes that will be of benefit to your community.
Good Gym Barnet
Sign-up to Good Gym Barnet to get fit while doing good in your local community. Good Gym Barnet is a running group who meet up every week to get exercise while also undertaking voluntary tasks in the community. Why not go along one week to see if you like it, or even sign-up to run regularly to someone’s house for a chat!
Get involved with your local Altogether Better
Barnet has a number of local Altogether Better schemes –community networks that join up lots of different volunteering and community activities across different areas. Have a look to see if there’s a project near you that you might like to help with, or even suggest a new idea for a project yourself!
Adult Social Care People Bank
People Bank is a database of people who have told us that they would like to be more involved in shaping the way adult social care services work in the future. You can be involved as much or as little as you like. You can choose your areas of interest and the types of activities you would like to get involved in. Anyone who has experience of or an interest in adult social care is welcome to join, and the council will provide support where necessary so that you can participate.
Join a local neighbourhood watch
By taking part in your local neighbourhood watch, you can help to bring people together, while looking out for your family, your neighbours and your area. Either have a look at the Barnet Borough Watch website, or Barnet Homes if you’re one of their residents.
Diabetes UK, the charity for people with type 1 and 2 Diabetes has a network of around 250 voluntary groups throughout the UK with the aim to provide support, companionship and information for people and their families living with both type 1 and 2 Diabetes.
Monthly meetings are held to discuss common issues relating to all aspects of diabetes with guest speakers in attendance. Why not volunteer to help spread the word, and possibly join the committee.
Support others to volunteer
Volunteering can be an empowering opportunity for adults with a disability, or long-term physical or health condition, to capitalise on their skills, interests and goals for the future. Supporting others to volunteer is a great way to help someone else, while also improving your own skills.
Is there a community project you need help getting off the ground? Through Crowdfunding, communities are able to host their ideas on a web page where neighbours, friends, family and businesses can all pledge funds to help them meet their target to deliver their project. Barnet Council will be offering pledges of up to £5,000 to support the creativity of Barnet residents who want to do something positive for their communities and help make their local areas even better places to live, work and visit. Visit: https://www.spacehive.com/movement/barnet-together/about to get involved or find out more.
Get involved at Barnet Hospital radio
Barnet Hospital has its own dedicated hospital radio station, which patients can listen to all day - every day! Why not join the team of ward interviewers who whizz around the wards talking to the patients, collect song requests and bring them back to the studio.
For some patients this maybe their only visitor so the more volunteers on board the better! Contact email@example.com or telephone 020 8216 4725 on a Wednesday evening between 7pm - 10pm for more information.
Barnet Senior's Assembly
Barnet Seniors’ Assembly produce a Bi-monthly Newsletter for the benefit of the over 55’s in the Borough of Barnet, if you would like to volunteer, please visit www.baseas.org.uk.
If you do not have access to the web or email you can contact Barnet Seniors’ Assembly on 020 3778 0151 and leave a message with your name and number so they can call you back.
Use My Account to report a problem
Use the council’s My Account service to access services, such as reporting problems and tracking progress dealing with them, finding out about bin collection dates, paying parking permits, registering and paying for council tax, applying for library e-membership, managing your housing benefit, and finding services and events close to home. This makes access much easier for you, as well as reducing pressure on council customer services.
Order a compost bin or wormery. Not only does home composting help your garden but it helps the environment. When waste is sent to landfill, air cannot get to the organic waste.
