Barnet Register Office has a new home
Final arrangements are being made ahead of the transfer of the Barnet Register Office to its new home at Hendon Town Hall.
From 6 February 2017, residents can visit the new site to officially record births, death, marriages and civil partnerships within the borough.
All births in England and Wales must be registered within 42 days of the child being born – for babies born in Barnet, either at home or at Barnet General Hospital, parents can now use Hendon Town Hall if they wish to.
Couples will also now be able to use the iconic Grade II listed building to get married in, with various rooms of different capacities that are suitable to use as wedding venues available for hire.
As well as registration services, the office provides a Nationality checking service for those wishing to apply for British citizenship, with successful applicants invited to a special citizenship ceremony within the council chambers under the new arrangements. Residents can also take advantage of the office’s settlement checking service for spouses of British citizens applying for settlement and European passport checking service for permanent European Economic Area residence applications.
The new facilities have been provided by reconfiguring space within the ground floor of the building, currently used by the council’s governance team. A new, purpose-built office has been created upstairs by partitioning committee room 3.
Councillor Daniel Thomas, Chairman of the Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee, said: “We hope residents will enjoy using the new Register Office for many years to come. As well as providing an improved service in the prestigious surroundings of the town hall, savings will be made for the council by consolidating services into one building”
Options to develop the current site of the Register Office in Burnt Oak Edgware are currently being explored.
