Barnet nominated for Inside Housing Awards

Two affordable housing development schemes in Barnet have been nominated as part of the Inside Housing Development Awards.

The Inside Housing Development Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the very best residential development across the UK from the past year. With 13 categories recognising schemes, teams and solutions, there is a category to suit all the key players, including landlords, developers, architects and funders.

Barnet Council has been nominated for the best affordable housing development (rural and suburban) for its work, delivered alongside Re, in regenerating the Stonegrove and Spur Road Estate in Edgware. Before the construction, which began in 2014/2015, the estate was comprised of approximately 600 homes built in the 1960s and 70s, ranging from four-storey maisonette blocks to 11-storey tower blocks. This scheme aims to create 999 homes of mixed tenure, with improved living conditions and reduced rent for the residents.

Mae Architects and Genesis Housing Association have also been entered in the best affordable development (urban) category for stage B of the Grahame Park regeneration programme – a scheme that will deliver a new and thriving mixed tenure community, consisting of 2,756 new homes. This entry was submitted on Barnet Council’s behalf by Genesis Housing, through the Delivering for Barnet regeneration programme.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Chairman of the Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee, said: “It is fantastic news that our efforts to regenerate and transform the borough have been recognised. We’re especially pleased that the Stonegrove and Spur Road Estate and Grahame Park will feature so prominently in the awards - two areas that we have worked incredibly hard to revitalise through the Delivering for Barnet Programme. These nominations are testament to that hard work and we wish them the best of luck at the award ceremony.”

The judges on the panel will assess:

  • A breakdown of the tenure on the development
  • How the development meets local housing need
  • Design and sustainability features/construction methods
  • Resident and stakeholder feedback
  • Location and infrastructure considerations
  • What the developers regard as unique about this development that others might learn from

The Inside Housing Development Awards will take place on Thursday, 23 November.
