Local elections 2018 – register to vote

  • Elections in Barnet

Barnet Council has launched its campaign to encourage residents to check that they are registered to vote ahead of the forthcoming local elections, set to take place on Thursday 3 May.

As part of a public information campaign, Barnet Council will be raising awareness of how people living in the borough’s 21 wards can vote in the local election through a range of outdoor advertising, social media and public engagement events.

The campaign kicks off with every home in the London Borough of Barnet receiving a Household Notification Letter from Monday 26 February, which confirms the names of the people currently on the Electoral Register for that address. Residents that are registered, and aged 18 or over on or before polling day, will be able to vote on 3 May.

Residents are being asked to check their Household Notification Letter and make sure that the names of all residents who are eligible to be registered are listed. If the information on the letter is correct, no further action needs to be taken and they do not need to respond if there are no changes to make.

If there is anyone living at the household, that is eligible to register whose name does not appear on the letter, they should visit gov.uk/register-to-vote as soon as possible to apply to join the electoral register. Applications to join the electoral register must be received before Tuesday 17 April.

Residents are eligible to vote in Barnet’s local council elections if they are 18 years or over on polling day, a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the European Union.

Deputy Chief Executive and Deputy Returning Officer, Cath Shaw, said: “In the build-up to the local elections, it’s important to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered.   We want to make it as easy as possible for people to vote in the forthcoming local elections, so they can have their say on the political direction of the Council over the next four years.

“Residents will soon start receiving their Household Notification Letters and we would strongly encourage everyone to look out of these and check the details for their respective household.”

Some key dates that residents need to be aware of are:

• Applications to join the electoral register must be received before Tuesday 17 April
• Applications for new postal votes and to change existing postal or proxy arrangements must be received before 5pm on Wednesday 18 April
• Any new applications to vote by proxy must be received before 5pm on Wednesday 25 April.
• Polling day, 7am-10pm on Thursday 3 May
