Register to vote for the next Mayor of London
With less than three months to go before the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections, Barnet residents are reminded they must be registered in order to vote.
On Thursday 5 May, Barnet’s voters will go to the polls to elect the Mayor of London, the ‘Barnet and Camden constituency’ London Assembly member and the 11 London-wide Assembly members.
Eligible residents must have registered by April 18 in order to vote on the day. Registration is quick and easy using the dedicated website at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
Changes to the voter registration system brought in by the government last year mean that eligible residents are now personally responsible for registering themselves to vote under the new ‘Individual Electoral Registration’ (IER) system, as the previous ‘head of household’ registration system has now been abolished.
The new online application process makes it easier and more convenient for young people in particular to get onto the register. If you are a young person aged 16 or 17 you can already register to vote and if you turn 18 on or before May 5 you will be able to vote on election day, so long as you have registered by 18 April.
Of course, with the national referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU now set for 23 June it’s even more important that young people make sure they register before their 18th birthday.
If your name is not on the electoral register you cannot vote in any elections or referendums, and your credit rating could also be affected.
Chief Executive of Barnet Council and Returning Officer, Andrew Travers said: “Anyone eligible who is not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible so they can have their say on issues that affect their day-to-day lives. If you have recently moved into the borough or within the borough, or are turning 18, you still have time to register to vote and I would urge you to do so soon.”
Residents unsure of their eligibility to vote or who cannot register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote should contact Barnet’s Electoral Registration team by: phone 020 8359 5577 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
