  • office space for their staff
  • hoarding around the perimeter to secure the site

Site access

  • will be via the Barnet Council Greenspaces depot entrance on Champions Way (although vehicles will use the leisure centre entrance between 7 - 8.15am on weekdays, until the construction of the new Greenspaces Depot is complete).
  • a temporary access road will be created around the planned building to provide safe access for material and vehicle movement.
  • a gatesman and traffic marshal will be in place to ensure that site traffic can be safely negotiated in and out of the construction site

Will the existing Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre remain open while the new centre is built?

Yes, the leisure centre will remain open as normal throughout the construction period.

The car park will remain open as normal during the construction period; however there may be slight adjustments to the public entrance to allow for construction traffic and site access.  Any changes will be communicated in advance and public access will be clearly signposted.

December works

Graham Construction started work on site in early December. So far, the early works have consisted of putting in place the following measures:

  • removal of any obstructions for construction traffic on the site
  • office space for their staff
  • hoarding around the perimeter to secure the site

Site access

Graham Construction has installed a new access point via Lawton Road. Now that construction work has started we kindly ask residents to observe the parking restrictions in place on Lawton Road.

Will Church Farm Leisure Centre remain open while the new centre in Victoria Recreation Ground is built?

Yes, Church Farm Leisure Centre will remain open as normal until the new facility is complete.

Will Victoria Recreation Ground remain open while the new centre is being built?

Victoria Recreation Ground will remain open during construction. However, public access via Lawton Road may be altered at times to allow for construction traffic. Any changes will be communicated in advance and public access will be clearly signposted.

Can I still use the play area and tennis courts at Victoria Recreation Ground?

Unfortunately, the play area in Victoria Recreation Ground will be removed and the tennis courts closed from 6 Nov 2017 to allow for construction traffic and general site access. Both the play area and the tennis courts will be re-provided as part of the future development.

Other nearby play areas and tennis courts.

Construction operating hours

The site operating hours will be from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with the occasional Saturday between 8am to 1pm.

Access to the sites during construction

In both cases:

  • During the construction works no roads will be closed, allowing the public and school buses to travel and park unimpeded and continue on their route without diversions.
  • A strict policy will be in place to ensure the construction traffic adhere to the designated route through the residential neighbourhood to ensure that we minimise the impact to the residents.
  • The site will be secured with a physical fence and access gate to prevent unauthorised access.

How can I find out more information throughout the construction programme?

Communication throughout the construction period will include:

  • Updates at key points through our website, Twitter and Facebook pages.
  • Graham Construction will contact residents within the catchment area of both sites by letter providing points of contact throughout construction period.
  • We will also work with Graham Construction to produce a newsletter which will be distributed to local residents.
  • Any other updates (as required) to residents in the immediate locality, for example to outline a change to public access.
