A: You can submit an application online or by completing a form and emailing it   at building.control@barnet.gov.uk or posting it to us

A: An inspection can be booked by calling 020 8359 4500

Q: What type of application should I use?

A: For minor works to residential properties you may use a Building Notice. For all other buildings, where the work may affect fire safety to flats or you are building within 3 meters of a public sewer you should submit a Full Plans application

Q: How much does a building regulation application cost?

A: Please have a look at our fee schedules. For complex works it is recommended you request an individually assessed fee by emailing your existing and proposed plans to building.control@barnet.gov.uk.

Q: Do I need building regulation consent to extend or alter my home?

A: Yes, however there are exemptions. Check out our guide to renovating your home or the government web site for building regulations and planning matters.

Q: Is planning Approval the same as Building Control approval?

A: No, planning deals with the use and appearance of land and buildings, i.e. the impact on the environment, traffic, neighbours etc. Building control are concerned with  health and safety,  energy conservation and that facilities are provided for all people including those with disabilities.

Q: Do I need both planning and building control approval?

A: Yes, depending on the type of work. For clarification on specific works please check the government web site or call us 020 8359 4500

Q: Can I request a historical search to be carried out on my property?

A: Yes, we accept requests from either your  solicitor or from the home owner. You need to show you are the owner of the property and the request must be a signed letter or signed email. NB! there is a non refundable charge for this service.

Q: Can I view plans or drawings relating to a property I do not own?

A: Yes, but you must have written and signed consent from the property owner. NB! there is a non refundable charge for this service.

Q: Can I view drawings of my own property?

A: Yes, but you need to make the request by email/writing showing you are the owner. NB! there is a non refundable charge for this service.

Q: Can I obtain copies of plans relating to my property?

A: Yes, but due to copyright laws copies of drawings can only be obtained with the written consent of the author of the drawings. NB! there is a non refundable charge for this service.

Q: How far back do building control records go?

A: Building control records have been held electronically since 1990. Records previous to 1990  might exist in hardcopy in the archives, these can only be obtained by carrying out a physical search of the archives. These are not guaranteed and there is a non refundable fee payable for this service.

Q: Can you recommend a builder?

A: No, but the Government backed Trust Mark Scheme can help in finding a builder or tradesman

Q: How do I find a registered electrician and what rules apply to electrical work?
