Over 50s fitness
- Public health
There's plenty of opportunities for older residents in Barnet to increase their levels of physical activity:
Try our marked and measured routes in nine of our parks around the borough. Or how about a sociable health walk? The council offers a program of instructor-led walks in various parks and open spaces around the borough, on various days. Discounts are available for the over 60s.
Leisure centres: being active indoors
Depending on where you live, Better Health and Fitness Senior memberships are open to anyone aged either over 50, 55 or 60. Check your local Better leisure centre to see if you qualify for a Better Health and Fitness Senior membership.
Over 50s can join any of Barnet's six leisure centres at a reduced price and take part in a range of activities. The activities not only help to keep you fit and active, they also provide a great opportunity to socialise and make new friends.
Fun and affordable activities
Love to Move, run by The Saracens Foundation, offers over 50s the chance to get physically active in a relaxed, sociable environment. Activities include dance, Nordic walking, pilates and walking sports. Email HealthandWellbeing@saracens.net to find out more.
Free exercise programmes
If you struggle to get out and about, why not try our fun and free exercise programme, devised by our partners at GLL, at home. Start slowly by trying one or two exercises and increase as your confidence builds.
Whether you are just starting out, wanting to get back into a sport or perhaps want to try something new the BBC's "Get Inspired" website provides sports films and features for inspiration and easy to follow guides. There's also hints and tips and practical advice for everyone, regardless of your age, gender or ability.
Radio 2 presenters Ken Bruce and Lynn Bowles took part in the Get Inspired trampolining challenge at Hendon Leisure Centre. Ken showed that at 63 years old, age doesn't have to be a barrier to being active. So why not try something new!
