Enforcement Guidance for single-use vapes consultation

Engage Barnet banner final

Background

On 1 June 2025 it became illegal in the UK to sell or supply single-use vapes under the Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (England) Regulations 2024. This ban includes any 'disposable' vapes which are not refillable, and which contain a battery which cannot be recharged. It is intended to reduce the environmental harm caused by the waste from these products when they have been discarded or disposed of, and also to reduce vaping among young people.

The London Borough of Barnet Trading Standards is a regulator for the purposes of enforcing these regulations, and as a regulator we are required to publish guidance on our use of the fines, notices and other penalties contained in the regulations, and to consult on this guidance before it is finalised.

What we are consulting on

We are consulting on new powers available to authorised Trading Standards Officers employed by the borough, detailed under The Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (England) Regulations 2024.

This is your opportunity to give us your feedback on the draft guidance.

How to have your say

Please read the draft guidance and if you have any comments before it is finalised, please:

  • email: trading.standards@barnet.gov.uk
  • phone: 020 8359 5355
  • write to us: Trading Standards Team, Assurance and Public Protection, London Borough of Barnet, 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale, London, NW9 4EU.

What happens after the consultation closes?

We will publish the results of the consultation, our decision and how we are acting on the results of the consultation on this page in March 2026.
