Barnet: Borough of Sanctuary

Borough of Sanctuary image

Barnet Council is proud to be recognised as a Borough of Sanctuary, showing our commitment to welcoming and supporting refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. This status - awarded by City of Sanctuary UK - reflects our dedication to creating a community built on dignity, inclusion and safety for those escaping war, persecution or human rights abuses.

We work with local organisations, faith groups and community networks to help sanctuary seekers access housing, education, healthcare, employment and cultural opportunities. Through national resettlement schemes, Barnet has supported families and individuals from Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Hong Kong.

Shaped by the voices of sanctuary seekers, our strategy focuses on four key priorities:

  • Inclusivity: A welcoming environment for all
  • Community spirit: Celebrating diversity and unity
  • Empowerment: Helping people rebuild and contribute
  • Active listening: Ensuring voices shape services and decisions.

Our approach is rooted in inclusivity, openness, participation, integrity and inspiration. Services are designed to respond to the needs of vulnerable groups including unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

The Borough of Sanctuary Network brings together community, voluntary and faith organisations to share best practice and deliver initiatives that promote wellbeing and social connection including Refugee Week and cultural events.

Barnet is committed to being a borough where everyone - regardless of background or circumstance - feels safe, supported and empowered to take part in civic life. Whether you’re here for a short time or building a future, Barnet is a place where everyone can belong.
