Explanation of the 2026 increase
There are 3 different elements of council tax. The overall increase in the amount residents in Barnet pay once the different elements of council tax are combined for 2026/2027 is 4.8%.
The elements of your Council Tax are:
- London Borough of Barnet (LBB), including the Adult Social Care element general increase of 4.98%
- Greater London Authority increase of 4.1% (LBB has no control over this element)
Changes to your property that affect banding
Your property may be revalued and put in a different band if:
- you make major alterations to it, such as adding an extension or annexe (the band won’t change until you sell the property)
- you split a single property into self-contained flats
- you convert flats into a single property
- you start or stop working from home
- there are significant changes to your local area, like a new road being built.
You may get a separate Council Tax bill if your property includes a self-contained annexe
