IoT Network

Fostering innovation with Internet of Things (IoT)

We have deployed a borough-wide Internet of Things (IoT) network using LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology.

This network will connect a range of sensors and devices to collect useful data. Combined with our Urban analytics platform, this data will help us understand how the borough is working and improve services for residents.

Projects powered by the IoT network and how will they benefit you?

  • Connected water meteringBy monitoring things like water usage and waste levels in real-time, we can optimise collection routes and respond to issues faster.
  • Smart waste management: Reduce waste, optimise resource management, and minimise our environmental impact.
  • Air quality monitoring. Measuring air quality at a hyperlocal granular level throughout the borough for the first time.
  • Gully level sensors: Monitor gully levels to prevent flooding and proactively maintain critical infrastructure.

This is just the beginning! The IoT network has the potential to transform many aspects of our community, creating a smarter, more efficient, and more connected borough for everyone.

Research and innovation

We’re working with partners like the West London Alliance and Middlesex University to create London’s first ‘living lab’. This project will use our IoT network and data platforms to test new ideas and put Barnet at the forefront of local authority innovation.
