Why is workplace health and wellbeing important?
75.5% of adults are in employment, on average spending a third of their waking hours in the workplace. In 2017, 131 million days were lost to sickness absence. Estimated cost of sickness absence and worklessness is said to be over £100 billion. Evidence shows good work is good for the health and that bad working environments may contribute to poor health.
What can employers do?
Employers can reduce the incidence of this in their organisation by providing workplace health and wellbeing activities, promoting and managing the health and wellbeing of staff, managing sickness absence and presenteeism (a person physically at work, but unproductive). These can include activities in the workplace, by the employer or other partners, to address these issues and actions to address health and safety risks.

Healthy Workplace Charter Commitment Award
Businesses based in London are also encouraged to apply for the Mayor’s Healthy Workplace Charter. This enables businesses to embed wellbeing and good work practices whilst working to achieve the prestigious Award.
Both the London Borough of Barnet and Middlesex University have been awarded Excellence by the Mayor of London’s Healthy Workplace award. Mayors award is re-launching in February 2019 to encompass SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), and micro businesses to be involved.
