Did you know that regular running can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, boost your mood and keep your weight under control?
Whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone that just wants to be able to run that little bit further, there’s something available for everyone in Barnet.
NHS 5K running plan
If you’re happy to plan your own routes or just want to run around your local streets, try NHS's Get running with Couch to 5K.
The plan is designed to get you off the couch and gradually work you up to running 5k or for half an hour, in just nine weeks. It starts with a mixture of running and walking, to gradually build up your fitness and stamina.
Marked and measured routes
If you want to try running a pre-plotted route at your own pace, the Marked and Measured Routes based in a number of the council’s parks and green spaces are ideal. These are free courses of 1k, 2.5k or 5k which you can walk or run at your own pace.
Once you can run 5k comfortably, and you want to see how well you’re doing, why not try Parkrun, our free weekly event? It takes place every Saturday at 9am in Oak Hill Park, East Barnet and is open to all ages and abilities.
You can choose to walk, jog or run the course and you’ll be given your 5k time at the end. So why not have a few goes and see if you can keep improving your time? To take part you need to register in advance.
