Get Online Week 2017

Get Online Week 2017 aims to help the 15.2 million people in the UK who are not making full use of the internet.

This year, the Nationwide campaign is encouraging you to try 1 thing - that is, use the internet to do just one thing that you would usually do offline.

#try1thing at our free events

We have a number of free events in our libraries during Get Online Week where we can help you try something new online.

Try learning a language online

  • Mon 2 Oct – 3.30 – 4.30pm
  • Burnt Oak Library

Start learning a new language today for FREE!! With your Barnet library card you can get unlimited access to 100 + language courses, including ESOL.

In this session we will show you how it works, help you sign up and get started. We will have limited tablet devices available to use but feel free to bring your own too.

Try reading online – digital drop-in

  • Tues 3 Oct - 2 - 3pm
  • Osidge Library

Did you know that Barnet libraries have thousands and thousands of ebooks, eaudiobooks…even all your favourite magazines, available to download for free? Bring your phone or tablet device (or use one of ours) and we can show you how it works

Improving your health online

  • Tues 3 Oct - 3-4pm
  • Osidge Library

There are lots of ways you can use the internet to support your health. You can make GP appointments online, order repeat prescriptions and find advice on specific symptoms and conditions. You can also come and ask us about the ‘Reading Well’ initiative and find out how books can improve your health too!

Stay in touch with family and friends (social media and video calls)

  • Thurs 5 Oct, 3 – 4.30pm
  • Golders Green Library

Social media is one of the most common methods of communication and a great way to stay in touch with friends and relatives, share photos, keep up to date with your interests and more. Are you feeling left behind? We can help explain how social media works and get you signed up and started on facebook or twitter. If you have an email address please make sure you know it!

We will also be on hand to help you with video calling in the second part of the session (but you will need to bring your own tablet for this)

Try online shopping

  • Thurs 5 Oct, 5 – 6.30pm
  • Golders Green library

Learn how online shopping can help you save you money, time and get you better deals. This session will help you learn how to be safe while paying for products and services online with tips and tricks on how best to protect your personal information and consumer rights.
