The Arts Depot joins Barnet’s movement to become a Dementia Friendly Community

The Arts Depot in North Finchley has recently become another venue in Barnet accredited by the London Mayor Dementia Friendly Venues Charter as a Dementia Friendly Venue.

As part of the Council’s work to become a ‘Dementia Friendly Community’, organisations are encouraged to join venues such as The Arts Depot, RAF Museum, and Copthall Leisure Centre, who have all recently gained Dementia Friendly accreditation, to help make Barnet a place where people living with dementia are understood, respected and supported.

How to get involved:

  • Join the Dementia Friendly Barnet Partnership. Formed of local organisations, the partnership has developed a clear programme of action in consultation with people affected by dementia. They are initially prioritising support to arts and culture venues, leisure centres, faith communities and local high street businesses. Becoming a Dementia-Friendly Community is a huge task, which will take a number of years. If you we would like to join the partnership or find out about becoming a Dementia Friendly Venue, contact Seher.Kayikci@barnet.gov.uk
  • Encourage your favourite local businesses to take part in the Dementia Friendly scheme via the Healthier High Streets programme.
  • Take Understanding Dementia training. This free CPD certified course supports organisations who need to create or improve their current policies around ensuring the best customer and staff experience for those living with dementia.
  • Become a Dementia Friend. A Dementia Friend is somebody who learns about dementia so they can help their community.
  • Signpost people living with dementia, or caring for someone with dementia, to Dementia Friendly activities and support via Age UK Barnet and Barnet Carers.

The council expects that over 7,000 people will be living with dementia in Barnet by 2040.

Whether you join the Dementia Friendly Partnership or become a Dementia Friend, any action great or small supports the borough’s aim to become a place where people living with dementia can contribute to community life and live well.
