Barnet Council is encouraging sustainable driving by allowing more cars into the free green emissions band, previously only given to electric vehicles.

This green initiative, starting in April 2017, will benefit approximately 1,500 current parking permit holders in the borough, who will not need to pay for their parking permits.

In January 2015, the council introduced a new emissions based residents’ parking permit scheme, which charges motorists based on the carbon dioxide emissions (gCo2) their cars emit.

Councillor Dean Cohen, Chairman of the Environment Committee, said: “We want to do everything we can to encourage people to use less polluting vehicles, so we are making it easier for more cars to get into the free green emissions band.

“This will assist with our long term aims to improve air quality, which will in turn benefit the health of everyone who lives, works or visits our borough.

“This positive move to increase the Green Annual Permit band follows Barnet being awarded Cleaner Air Borough (CAB) status last month, for effectively monitoring and reducing air pollution.”
