Barnet Council has published its new Transport Strategy, setting out how it will improve transport across the borough to support residents, businesses and visitors into the 2040s.

The strategy outlines the council’s approach to delivering a safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport system. It recognises the vital role transport plays in enabling access to jobs, education, services and leisure and how good transport links help strengthen communities.

The Council has already achieved improvements in transport, which include a 48 per cent reduction in deaths and serious injuries on the borough’s roads over the past decade. It has invested £97m in highway maintenance, opened Brent Cross West station, created step-free access at Colindale, and rolled out borough-wide EV charging infrastructure.

The new strategy sets out key actions to build on this success:

  • Continuing to improve road safety
  • A coordinated cycle route network programme to deliver key routes and targeted local improvements
  • Continuing to deliver school streets, based on engagement with schools, students and residents
  • Exploring the scope for a borough-wide electric vehicle car club
  • Partnership with TfL to improve bus reliability and frequency, including bus lanes where appropriate
  • Continued investment in step-free access at Barnet stations
  • Collaboration with the Mayor and West London boroughs to progress the West London Orbital rail project.

The strategy also supports the council’s wider ambitions set out in Our Plan for Barnet, including its commitment to becoming a net zero borough by 2042. It also highlights the importance of working in partnership with communities to deliver change.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:

“Our new transport strategy is about making sure people have real choices in how they travel, while reducing the negative impacts on health and the environment.

“It aims to deliver a transport network that works for everyone, with sustainable travel options that benefit Barnet’s people, businesses and environment.

“We’ve listened to residents and will continue working with them to deliver improvements that benefit the whole borough.”

The strategy has been developed through engagement with residents and stakeholders and sets out the scale of work needed to meet the council’s goals.
