The annual Barnet Civic Awards ceremony, held at Hendon Town Hall last night (28 April), honoured individuals and organisations that make a significant impact through their voluntary work.

This year, awards were given in three categories: ‘Barnet Lifetime Achievement Civic Award’; ‘Barnet Award for Outstanding Service to the Community’ and ‘Barnet Young Citizen Outstanding Service to the Community’.

The awards recognised individuals and organisations that have gone above and beyond, whether through fundraising, volunteering, or other forms of service to improve the quality of life in their local community.

Among those awarded on the night included, David Bone and David Lardi, who both received the Barnet Lifetime Achievement Civic Award. David Bone was recognised for his 65 years as a stalwart of Barnet Market, and unwavering commitment and dedication among traders and customers alike. And David Lardi, for his dedication to amateur music-making for over 50 years, and serving as Music Director for several orchestras and choirs, including the Finchley Symphony Orchestra and the Finchley Chamber Choir.

A Lifetime Achievement award was also awarded posthumously to Christine Shields. Christine was recognised for her valued contributions to the East Barnet Residents’ Association and the East Barnet Festival. Her family attended the ceremony to receive the award in her honour.

The Age UK Barnet Volunteering Team were also recognised on the night, for their exceptional support of Age UK Barnet’s vital work.

The Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Barnet, Mr Martin Russell MBE DL, read the individual citations submitted for each of the nominees, describing their considerable voluntary contributions to the borough, before announcing their award.

The awards were presented by The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet.
