Barnet’s free home energy fix

As energy prices rise, we understand that many Barnet residents will feel the strain, especially our most vulnerable. With a predicted 10% increase in the energy price cap this winter, following the end of winter fuel payments for residents over 60, it’s more important than ever to get the support you need.

In Barnet, 40% of our carbon emissions come from residential energy use—creating a huge opportunity to cut costs and reduce our environmental impact.

That’s why Barnet Council has partnered with Green Doctors, energy efficiency experts, to offer residents free tailored home energy support. Together, we’ll help you save money, keep your home warm, and reduce your energy consumption—all while working towards Barnet’s goal of becoming a net zero borough by 2042.

What’s included in the scheme?

By making a Green Doctor referral, you’ll receive access to:

1.  Free home energy visit
   In-person (or, if preferred over-the-phone) assessments tailored to your home and your needs.
    
2. Energy saving kits
   Free items like LED lightbulbs, draught-proofing materials, and radiator reflectors.
    
3. Support for energy bills
   Personalised advice on lowering bills, switching suppliers, and accessing discounts or grants.
    
4. Energy efficiency guidance
   Tips on insulating your home, improving heating systems, and exploring renewable energy options.
    
5. Signposting to additional support
   Access to government schemes, financial aid, and local programs to reduce energy costs further.

Appointments can be conducted in person, over the phone, or via video call, with interpretation services available for non-English speakers and sign language users.

Who can access the support?

The free Green Doctor service is open to Barnet households meeting one of the following criteria:

• Someone with a disability or health condition worsened by the cold.
• Residents aged over 60.
• Households with a child under 10 years or a pregnant family member.
• Households with an annual income under £21,000.

How to apply

Sign-up and win one of four £100 B&M gift vouchers.

1. Visit the Green Doctors webpage to submit your referral and complete your free home energy visit here,
2. Once you have made your referral, sign-up to the BarNET ZERO e-bulletin to stay informed about future sustainability initiatives in Barnet.

If you sign-up by 28 February 2025, you will be entered into a prize draw to win one of four £100 B&M vouchers to help with household essentials.

Terms and Conditions for the prize draw

• The prize draw is open to residents of Barnet who sign up for the BarNET ZERO e-bulletin before 28 February 2025.
• There will be four winners who each receive a £100 B&M voucher.
• The winners will be notified by email or phone.
• The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or other items.
