Construction work has officially started on the new Community Centre in Tarling Road, East Finchley.

Led by GRAHAM Construction, these works will pave the way for a brand new Community Centre to be opened in autumn 2018. The Tarling Road Community Hub will replace the Old Barn community centre and create a brand new facility, which will provide a shared space for local community groups.

Once built, the new centre will be home to a number of local community groups, including the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association (SBWA).

Barnet Council’s Planning Committee approved plans in March 2016 for a new community hub to be constructed.  The new centre at Tarling Road, will provide a permanent new home for local community groups that apply and are accepted as tenants. The new centre includes 980 square metres of functional space, as well as a learning space, large meeting hall and café with seating area.

Proposals for the Tarling Road Community Hub were developed in close consultation with residents. This included two public exhibitions to showcase how the building might look, which were attended by around 100 people.

The council is now working closely with residents to appoint a management organisation to run the centre and develop a schedule for how the space will be used.

The Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger, recently visited the Tarling Road site to mark the start of construction works. Speaking at the visit, Councillor Salinger said: “We’re delighted that work is now underway on the new Community Centre in Tarling Road. This new centre will provide a modern, fit for purpose facility that all local community groups can apply to use.

“I was greatly impressed by the plans that were presented to me during my visit and I have no doubt that the centre will become a highly valued facility for communities in Barnet.”

GRAHAM Construction was appointed by the London Borough of Barnet as partner to deliver its portfolio of works within the borough in 2016. Rob Joyce, GRAHAM Construction’s London Office Director, said: “The Tarling Road Community Hub reinforces and supports the London Borough of Barnet’s commitment to providing residents with new and improved facilities. We look forward to working closely with the borough and wider project team to bring forward these works on time and to the highest quality.”
