The Leader of Barnet Council, Cllr Barry Rawlings, has responded to the weekend’s Middle East military action and its impact on Barnet’s communities:
“Barnet has London’s largest Iranian and Jewish populations.
“With the recent escalation of events in Iran and across the wider Middle East, we recognise that many residents in our borough are feeling understandably heightened emotions. We know that members of our community have family, friends, and loved ones directly affected, and we want to express our deepest sympathy and support during this uncertain time.
“We also acknowledge the hope many hold for a democratic future for Iran. In recent days, we have seen residents take to the streets to express their views. As a council, we stand in solidarity with all who choose to exercise their democratic rights peacefully and respectfully.
“Our borough’s strength lies in its diversity, its cohesion, and the care our communities show for one another. We remain committed to working closely with community leaders, faith groups, and local organisations to offer reassurance, listen to concerns, and ensure that everyone feels safe and supported.”
