Barnet Council and partner agencies are supporting Barnet Police to offer reassurance and support to residents following yesterday’s terrorist attack in London.

Residents are asked to remain calm but also vigilant of any suspicious activity. Those that see anything that causes concern or raises suspicions should call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline confidentially on 0800 789 321. In an emergency, always dial 999.

Police are appealing to anyone with any photos or video of the incident in Westminster to upload them at: www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk

Barnet Borough Commander, Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Rose, added: “We are mobilising resources to get extra uniformed officers out on the street, so the public will see more police on our streets from today, but please do not be alarmed – it pays to be cautious and it pays to be prepared.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is inviting Londoners to come together at 6pm in Trafalgar Square for a candlelit vigil for the victims.

The Union flag is being flown at half-mast at Hendon Town Hall in Barnet and the council will be holding a minute’s silence at 2.38pm today as a mark of respect.

Councillor Richard Cornelius, Leader of the Council, has issued the following statement: “Our hearts go out to all the families and friends of those who were killed or injured in the terrorist attack in London yesterday.

“The sudden and violent nature of this abhorrent attack on completely innocent citizens going about their normal lives was deeply shocking.

“We are rightly proud of our borough’s diversity and we will continue to work closely with the police and community groups to reassure residents that Barnet is a safe place to go about their business and their lives.

“We stand together with the rest of London in offering our thoughts and condolences to those whose lives have been needlessly shattered.”

Trevor Alexander, Vice-Chair of Barnet Multi Faith Forum, added: “Barnet Multi Faith Forum condemns all acts of violence and is committed to working towards a peaceful, tolerant and inclusive society. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are suffering as a result of the events outside Parliament on Wednesday afternoon.”
