At an extraordinary meeting of the council on 1 March 2022 it was agreed that Cllr John Marshall be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough which The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Alison Cornelius, presented to him on behalf of the Council.

It is the highest award that can be bestowed in the Borough of Barnet and was awarded in recognition of the dedication to public service by John Marshall to residents over four decades.

Cllr Marshall began his life as a public servant to the people of Barnet as Member of the European Parliament for North London between 1979 – 1989. For the next decade, 1987 – 1997, he went on to be Member of Parliament for Hendon South.

Since 1998 until the present day, he has represented Garden Suburb Ward as Councillor, during which he has served as Mayor of Barnet in 2008/09, as a Cabinet Member and Committee Chairman.

The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Alison Cornelius, who chaired the meeting, led the tributes, saying:

“I would like to personally thank John for his four decades, and counting, of hard work and service to the people of Barnet.  He is an inspiration to all residents of the Borough and beyond for his tireless public service and hard work for the community and people he serves.”

Barnet Council Leader, Cllr Dan Thomas, said:

“I am absolutely delighted to see John receive the Freedom of the Borough, and I can’t think of a more deserving Councillor.

“He has represented Barnet residents internationally, in Westminster and at local council level serving the needs of generations of our community. We are lucky to have had someone so dedicatedly serve the borough for so many decades.”
