Councillor Zahra Beg sworn in as 62nd Mayor of Barnet

Councillor Zahra Beg has become the 62nd Mayor of Barnet, after being officially sworn in during the Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 19 May at Hendon Town Hall.

Cllr Zahra Beg takes over from the borough’s previous Mayor, Cllr Danny Rich. The Mayoress will be her daughter, Ms Aliyah Sapsard.

The Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Humayune Khalick and his wife Mrs Shama Khalick will be the Deputy Mayoress.

The Civic Ambassador will be Cllr Lachhya Bahadur Gurung and his wife Mrs Shova Gurung will be his Consort. The role of Civic Ambassador has been newly created to support the mayoralty to foster goodwill, civic pride and positive engagement within and beyond the Barnet community.

Cllr Beg has been a resident of Barnet for over 30 years and has raised her children in the borough. She has long been committed to supporting local communities and residents.

Elected as a councillor in May 2022 for Underhill Ward, Cllr Beg has served as a Cabinet Member for Equalities, Poverty Reduction and the Voluntary and Community Sector. She has also sat on other committees including the Health & Wellbeing Board, Children’s Services and Pensions. Cllr Beg is also a school Governor at Underhill School.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Khalick, was born in Camden before moving to Barnet aged two, where he grew up, married, and raised three children. He was elected as a Councillor for his home ward of Colindale South in 2022, serving as Vice-Chair of the Corporate Parenting Advisory Panel and sitting on several other committees including the Planning Committee. Cllr Khalick is also a school Governor of Sunnyfields Primary School.

Civic Ambassador Cllr Lachhya Bahadur Gurung was born in Nepal and gave 18 years of distinguished service to the Royal Corps of Signals in the British Army. He and his wife have lived in Barnet since 2005, bringing up two daughters and a son. He was elected to represent Hale Ward in 2018 and then the new Edgwarebury Ward in 2022. He served as Deputy Mayor to Cllr Caroline Stock in 2019-2021 and has sat on committees including the Licensing & General Purposes Committee, Planning Committee, the Children & Education Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee and the Corporate Parenting Advisory Panel. Cllr Gurung is also a School Governor of Fairway School.
