Local people of Colindale invited to rename new Square

Published:

Barnet Council is creating a brand-new public Square outside of its offices in Bristol Avenue, Colindale. The Square, located adjacent to Grahame Park, will make way for a new vibrant public seated area and landscaped greenery for all to enjoy, along with sufficient space to hold small-scale community events in the future.

The square, which has been designed and built to a high standard using high-quality materials, includes a flagpole for national recognition related activities and a new public indoor café on the ground floor of the Colindale office.

The council has taken the decision to rename the new square through public consultation and is inviting people that live, work and visit the area to get involved and vote on a new name.

To reflect Colindale’s close links to the Royal Air Force, the council has shortlisted four potential names from the Tiger Moth pilots, known as the First Eight, in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) during the Second World War. Each pilot played her part during the war and left a lasting legacy to others. The potential names are:

The poll – launched online today (Wednesday 6 October) – will run for a period of three weeks. The highest-ranking name selected by the public will undergo a formal approval process and a four-week statutory consultation period.

Once a name has been approved, the public will be invited to attend a renaming ceremony at the Square to mark the occasion. In addition to this, all nominated pilots' names will be celebrated collectively with a plaque in their honour installed either on the exterior or inside the Barnet Council office.

Through investment in local areas, we want to create attractive community spaces for everyone to use and benefit from, making Barnet a great place to live, work and visit.

Barnet Council is inviting anyone that lives, works or visits Colindale to take part. The public have until Wednesday 27 October to vote. To find out more and to vote, visit: https://engage.barnet.gov.uk/name-square-colindale
