Prepare yourself for lift off as this year’s Summer Reading Challenge takes us on a galactic 'Space Chase' adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Space Chase is this year’s Summer Reading Challenge which runs between 13 July and 14 September 2019.
Barnet’s libraries will be giving children aged between 4 and 11 years old the chance to take part in the free annual Reading Agency challenge which offers an incentive for children to keep reading and developing their literacy skills during the summer holidays.
This summer, children can sign up to help our super space family ‘The Rockets’ track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens. As they read library books, they will solve clues and collect special stickers to complete their mission folder.
Will they find the aliens in time to save the day?
Children can read any six books over the summer borrowed from a library in Barnet. The books can be fiction, non-fiction or any eBook or audiobook borrowed from Barnet’s digital collection.
If they go on to read an extra two books or more, children receive a 'super-reader' voucher for a free DVD loan in our extension challenge.
Libraries will also be putting on a huge range of free and low cost events suitable for children aged 3+ including 'Sign up Saturday' where children can sign up and grab a selfie with Buzz Lightyear and Princess Leia.
There will also be a chance to meet children’s author Rebecca Patterson and learn some illustration skills, take part in an interactive drama workshop, race a space buggy and learn to code a robot.
Barnet Libraries will also be running an inter-school competition with a trophy for the school with the highest number of pupils taking part.
There’s more information, including online sign up details and a full list of all the events taking place, available online at www.barnet.gov.uk/spacechase
Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “This year’s Summer Reading Challenge has a fantastic theme and I’m sure it is going to really capture the imaginations of our young readers, especially as it’s coinciding with the 50th anniversary of man first walking on the moon.
“Over the summer we’ve got all kinds of themed activities taking place in our libraries, there really is something for everyone.
“The challenge runs until September, so join the Rockets on their mission and sign up this summer.”
