Apply to vote by proxy

What is a proxy vote

A proxy is when you appoint someone to vote on your behalf.

Due to a change in legislation the way you apply for a Proxy vote has changed. Proxy votes can now be applied for online.

For those who cannot apply online paper forms will still be available. Please contact Electoral Services if you require a paper form sent to you on 020 8359 5577 or email ero@barnet.gov.uk

A signature and date of birth will still need to be provided, plus your National Insurance number will now be required.

Further information can be found on the Electoral Commission website.

Who can vote on your behalf as proxy

Anyone can be your proxy as long as they are registered to vote in that type of election. A person can only vote as proxy at the same election for:

  • no more than four people
  • anyone to whom they are related as spouse, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, child or grandchild

Proxy voters voting at a polling station will need to show their own photographic identification (not that of the elector they are voting on behalf of).

Where to send your proxy vote application

You can return your completed paper proxy vote application form by email to ero@barnet.gov.uk

Or you can post it to:

Electoral Services
London Borough of Barnet

If you haven’t received your proxy vote

If you have a permanent proxy vote arrangement, your proxy should have received the proxy polling card automatically.

If they haven’t, please phone the Electoral Services on 020 8359 5577 or email ero@barnet.gov.uk

Emergency proxy vote

In certain circumstances, where you have an emergency that means you cannot go to the polling station in person, you can apply for an emergency proxy up to 5pm on the election day (so long as the emergency occurred after the deadline for applying for a normal proxy vote).
