About parking suspensions
Suspending a parking place stops people from parking in it if you need to park a specific vehicle, preserve clear access, work on the highway or store materials. Additional licenses or permissions will be required for certain activities.
We normally suspend permit or paid parking places; however other types of bays may be suspended in exceptional circumstances.
We can’t guarantee that people will not park in a suspended bay, but if they do, they’ll get a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) and in certain circumstances the vehicle may be relocated or removed. If you wish to report a vehicle parked in contravention of a parking suspension you can call our enforcement line on 0204 636 9561 (Monday to Saturday 7:30am to 22:30pm, Sunday/Bank Holiday 08:30am to 16:30pm)
You can view parking restrictions to identify parking places to be suspended by searching the map at the Traffweb website.
This map will help you locate Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) information, Resident and Business Parking Bays or Parking Restrictions in London Borough of Barnet.
Please be advised that it is the applicant’s responsibility to check that an application matches the parking places available before submitting a suspension request. While we may contact you for clarification, an incorrect application may be delayed or result in the wrong bays being suspended.
Parking places on the public highway can be suspended in certain circumstances, for example for:
- removals
- building works i.e hoarding & scaffolding
- utility works i.e gas works
- skips
- special events
If you need to restrict the use of a location where parking is not normally subject to any restriction, or need to change the use of a location where waiting restrictions apply, you will need to contact the street works team to request a Temporary Traffic Order.
If you’re carrying out building work and require a skip you’ll need to get a skip operator licence.
If a suspension application is approved, we will provide clear signage to show that the bay is suspended from normal use and waiting and loading is prohibited. The signage will include the extent, duration and purpose of the suspension.
If you request the suspension of a parking place that has already been suspended by another customer or is otherwise unavailable, we will contact you to advise.
If you request a parking suspension for the purpose of building works, vehicles connected with those works must park within the suspended area.

Prices
Parking suspensions are charged at a daily rate of £69.63 per any bay per day (a 5-metre length).
There is also a non-refundable administration fee of £171.39 per application.
Payments
Card payments for a bay suspension must be made at the point of an online application.
Please be advised that the MiPermit parking permit system may send a request to authenticate your payment, for example via your banking app. Therefore, it is important that this authentication is completed to ensure that you successfully complete the payment for the suspension booking.
If you have already been registered on our finance system and carry out a large number of scheduled works across the borough i.e. Cadent gas or Affinity Water, you can apply and pay for your suspensions via invoice by selecting the parking bay suspension invoice option on the application portal. You would have needed to obtain an access email first. If you have not yet received the access email then please contact us by email to request this Parking.PaymentTeam@barnet.gov.uk
Once you have received the access email and have applied for your suspension on the application portal we will need you to email us Parking.PaymentTeam@barnet.gov.uk right away and confirm the suspension reference (BSU prefix), provide a copy of the Purchase Order (PO) on headed PDF paper including the following details:
- Purchase Order Number
- Suspension Booking Reference (BSU prefix)
- Street/Road Name
- Specific Location Details i.e. outside 51
- Suspension Reason
- Specified Dates (From/To)
Once the email has been received, the team can review the application in the back office. Once approved, you will be notified by email that the suspension application has been accepted.
Failure to email us as soon as the application(s) have been logged may result in a delay and possibly the suspension(s) not going ahead on time.
We may contact you for further information.
We will not accept any applications for invoice payments from companies that have not yet been registered with our finance system and who do not carry out a large number of scheduled works borough wide.
To register on our finance system, we will require the following information to be sent to us by email Parking.PaymentTeam@barnet.gov.uk
- Name of Company or Accounts Payable address if different for invoicing (on headed company paper)
- Address
- Contact Name
- Telephone Number
- VAT Number
- Email address for the invoice to be sent
Once the company has been registered we will notify you by email and send you the access email to be able to apply for the suspension invoice type.
You will then be able to proceed in making an application for a suspension via the invoice payment route as set out above.
Until then, and if you need to book a parking bay suspension you will need to pay via the card payment option.
Cancellations or changes
Please note that cancelling your parking bay suspension booking within your MiPermit account will not cancel the booking.
You will need to contact us.
It will not normally be possible to amend the location or start date of a suspension booking with less than five working days’ notice.
If the suspension boards have already been put on street, then we cannot amend a booking, and no refund can be issued.
Should you need to amend or cancel the suspension you have booked, please contact our customer services department on 0345 520 7007 (Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm, Saturdays 8am - 4pm and on Sundays and Bank Holidays 10am - 4pm) or via email at Barnetinfo@Mipermit.com
Parklet locations which we cannot suspend
In order to help businesses make the most of the outdoor space in front of their premises some parking bays around the borough have been suspended to allow the installation of parklets. These locations are listed below.
If you require a suspension in the vicinity of these locations, you must contact the customer services department to discuss options before making an application.
We cannot suspend parking bays which have been repurposed as a parklet but will do our best to assist with your requirements.

About parking dispensations
Parking dispensations allow you to park a vehicle in a place where you would not normally be allowed to park. For example, on a yellow line.
A parking dispensation is granted for one specific vehicle registration only per application and cannot be transferred from one vehicle to another.
We will consider the safety for other road users prior to approving an application for the requested location.
Here are some examples of when a dispensation can be granted:
- If there is a need to carry out specific work
- If your vehicle is too big to fit in a normal parking bay
- If there is a need to be as close to the premises as possible for loading or unloading goods and materials
- If there is no alternative parking space available
How to apply for a parking dispensation
Applications must be submitted at least 2 working days prior to the date you require your dispensation to start.
What you will need:
- area of the dispensation i.e Barnet
- location i.e street name
- vehicle registration number
- confirm the start date and duration
- reason for the dispensation i.e moving home
- confirm the exact location details
- email address
- your credit or debit card details, we do not accept AMEX

The charge is £51.90 per vehicle per day.
If you need more than one vehicle to be covered then you can apply for additional dispensations.
Payments for parking dispensations must be made at the point of an online application.
Please be advised that the MiPermit parking permit system may send a request to authenticate your payment, for example via your banking app. Therefore, it is important that this authentication is completed to ensure that you successfully complete the payment for the suspension booking.
Cancellations
The dispensation is not transferable, and no refunds will be given for periods of unused time.
Disclaimer
We reserve the right to cancel or withdraw a dispensation without notice as and when it is deemed necessary to do so, for example in connection with a major event, incident or emergency. Any payments made will be refunded as appropriate.
Please note that a dispensation means that, subject to terms and conditions, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will not be issued for parking in contravention of the parking restriction specified. The driver remains fully responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is parked safely and legally at all times.
