How school waiting lists work

You will be added to school waiting lists if you:

• don’t get a place at any of the schools you applied for
• have been offered a place at a lower preference school listed on your application and still want a place at a higher preference school

You can ask to have your child’s name added to school waiting lists if you:

• still want a place at a lower ranked school on your application
• add your child’s name to a school you didn’t list on your application

How long we keep names on waiting lists

Waiting list names will be held until the end of July - this does not apply to secondary transfer waiting lists for Queen Elizabeth (Boys) School, The Henrietta Barnett School and St Michael's Catholic Grammar School; these schools only hold secondary transfer waiting lists for the first term in the academic year.

You will need to make an in-year admission application in August 2024, if you want your child to join the lists for the 2024/25 academic year. 

Your child’s position on the list can go down as well as up, time spent on a waiting list isn’t taken into account.

In-year waiting lists

In-year waiting list names are normally held until the end of July each year and you have to submit a new in-year application for the following year.
