Export Hub gives businesses a boost in Barnet

The Export Hub Roadshow arrives in Barnet on 1 April 2016 as part of the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Exporting is GREAT nationwide tour. The Export Hub aims to help businesses succeed in international markets and demonstrate the world of opportunities that exists overseas. The event will give businesses the chance to meet and hear from some of the capital’s most respected business figures and local exporters on how they can take their business abroad.
New state-of-the-art Youth Zone

The £6million facility, which is being developed by charity OnSide alongside Barnet Council, will offer a wide range of activities for young people aged between eight and 19 and up to 25 for those with additional needs. Facilities at the Youth Zone, which will be located on part of Montrose Playing Fields in Colindale, will include dance, sport, art, music, drama, media, employability and mentoring programmes. Following a branding process last year, Barnet’s young people named the Youth Zone ‘Unitas’, to reflect the messaging on the borough’s coat of arms, which means ‘Unity’.
Young people go to the polls

Young people across the borough will be taking part in the poll which got underway on Monday 22 February and will close at midnight on Monday 7 March. Results of the online vote will be announced at a special results evening on 14 March at the North London Business Park. There are four positions as a Member of the Youth Parliament up for grabs, with members serving for one year. This year 24 candidates have entered the race for election.
BOOST Childs Hill project launched

BOOST Childs Hill is a spin-off project from the original BOOST (Burnt Oak Opportunity Support Team) which started in July 2015 and has engaged with over 800 residents and supported 298 into sustainable employment.
Tenancy fraudster jailed

Julie Miah, 45, of Douglas Road, Luton, who worked as a housing officer for a local authority in another part of the country, was handed a 12-month prison term and ordered to pay £20,000 in compensation after admitting she had never lived in the two-bed council property in East Finchley. Harrow Crown Court was told how Miah was first given the keys to the council property in Prospect Ring, in 2007, and immediately sublet it to a family member, while she moved into a house in Luton which she had jointly inherited.
Prevention services for adult social care

Across the country, adult social care is under growing pressure. The amount of money available for councils to spend has reduced and will continue to reduce over the coming years, our Adults and Safeguarding Committee must make over £15 million savings between 2017 and 2020. There is also growing demand for adult social care services.
Views sought on Fairer Contributions Policy

The consultation, which runs until 6 February 2017, asks residents for their opinions on proposals for its policy which sets out how much some people are asked to contribute to the cost of their care. Feedback from the consultation will contribute to the recommendations before a final decision is made on any changes. Any changes agreed following consultation will not come into effect until April 2017.
Mayor presents Saracens with The Freedom of the Borough

The Freedom of the Borough is the highest award the London Borough of Barnet Council can give. The award was presented to the chairman of Saracens Rugby Club, Mr Nigel Wray and the reigning champions of the European Cup, in recognition of the club’s sporting success, and for the way in which the club has been able to bring Copthall Stadium (Allianz Park) back into full use by the club and the community.
Prime Minister visits Barnet to announce housing pledge

The Prime Minister was taken on a tour of the Stonegrove Estate in Edgware - one of Barnet’s flagship regeneration schemes - where she pledged that is her personal mission to build more homes, more quickly across the UK. The regeneration of the Stonegrove and Spur Road Estates has created a new integrated community by replacing the existing homes with a new mixed tenure housing development. This includes 999 new homes, 451 of which are affordable, as well as the re-provision of a joint church and community centre.
Building work commences on Colindale offices

Staff are expected to start moving over to the new 90,000 square foot office development in 2018, which will save £1 million a year through reduced running costs. This is on top of the £4.5 million a year that has already been saved from moving out of one of the buildings at the North London Business Park in New Southgate, the council's main office site alongside Barnet House in Whetstone.
