Supported lodgings

If you’re unsure if you can offer your time for fostering, think about welcoming young people aged 16 or older into your home.

Our package includes allowances, training, ongoing guidance and support. This role is both challenging and rewarding, allowing you to create nurturing environments tailored to each young person’s needs.

What are Supported Lodgings?

Supported lodgings is a provision for young people aged 16 to 25 who cannot live with their families. Young people live in the home of a host family or individual, where they are provided with safe and supportive accommodation.

Being a Supported Lodgings Host means providing older young people a room at your home and meals. You will offer emotional support and help young people acquire practical life skills that supports them to become independent, confident young adults.

Unlike foster care, young people are not expected to become a member of the host family but are treated as a member of the household.

Who can be the host?

  • you will need to be over the age of 21 years. There is no upper age limit for hosts
  • you will need to have a spare room
  • you can work full time or part time or retired
  • you can be in receipt of means tested benefits
  • you can be single, married, divorced or co-habiting

What type of support do hosts offer young people?

  • Support young people in developing essential life skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, and laundry, enabling them to live independently.
  • Offer advice on career choices or assist with university applications.
  • Encourage maintaining attendance at training, education, or work.
  • Support them in continuing to develop internet safety.
  • Help in maintaining and building relationships with family, friends, and neighbours.

How to get involved?

Supported Lodgings make a difference in the lives of young people. Let’s build a stronger community by providing a helping hand and a welcoming home.
