Cemetery and crematorium privacy notice

Our cemetery and crematorium service manages Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium. We are a multi-faith site and provide cremation and burial services seven days per week. We also provide post funeral services including memorial plaques and cremated remains memorials.

The council is required to provide a funeral if the person is unable to pay for the funeral out of their estate. This is called a public health funeral.

We work with courts, the Government Legal Department (formerly Treasury Solicitor’s Department), medical referees (for cremations) and the council’s legal service.

We work with Ancestry.com to scan our burial and cremation records and they are uploaded to our burial and cremation database. Ancestry publishes the public elements of that information on their website.

While data protection legislation does not apply to deceased persons, we hold information about the deceased, as well as some information about family and professional service providers.

Personal information collected

  • Name and contact details of the applicant for the funeral and the grave or memorial leaseholder
  • Name of Funeral Director and Priest (if applicable)
  • Financial information
  • Equalities Information
  • Family/Relationship Information

How long we keep your information

  • Burial Records are kept in perpetuity (permanently retained)
  • Cremation records are kept by the authority for as long as the crematorium remains operational. Should the crematorium close the Secretary of State will instruct where the records shall be kept.
  • Lease records are kept for as long as the individual keeps the lease.
