Together, we are Barnet will highlight some of our many groups and local projects, as well as individuals, who contribute so much to our community.

This week we're focusing on Hadassa Kessler, director of operations and development for Kisharon, which supports people with learning difficulties to become valued members of the community.

“At Kisharon, we want to create a world in which people with learning difficulties have the same opportunities as their mainstream peers. We help individuals to progress, achieve independence, enjoy life and to become valued members of their community, through meaningful vocation and a fulfilling social life. Our social enterprises offer real work that helps people to build their employment skills, from bike repairs and sales to producing personalised gifts for celebrating the Jewish New Year.

“We play a big role in the community. We manage the library in Childs Hill, which is staffed by passionate local volunteers and is a social hub for people of all ages. Our social enterprises, like the bike repair shop, ensure that people in supported living or living in the family home take an active role in their community and make friends in the area.

“In addition to our Tuffkid Nursery, we are setting up a new building for our free school, which means that people with learning difficulties will be support from childhood into adulthood. They can live in their communities, and form lifelong social ties. We are creating a place for people in Barnet to feel comfortable and at home through our supported living programme to ensure they too can contribute to the community we create by growing together.”
