Why asbestos can be dangerous
Asbestos doesn't always create a health risk.
If you are moving or touching it you must be careful, it may be dangerous to disturb asbestos.
The risk arises from breathing in microscopic fibres released through mishandling or heavy wear.
What to do if you have asbestos
It's always best to seek professional advice before you remove it.
Ask to see the contractor's current asbestos handlers licence and a written quotation, before the company starts work for you.
Use an Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) approved contractor if you're:
- handling large amounts of material containing asbestos cement
- removing or disposing of other types of asbestos from commercial premises
ARCA keeps a list of members who are approved.
Asbestos removal in your home
You can find out about the household asbestos collection service operated by the City of London on behalf of Barnet Council.
You can dispose of cement asbestos at Hornsey Street Re-use and Recycling Centre.
