When is the referendum?

The referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU is on 23 June 2016. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

When is the deadline for registering to vote and how do I register?

The deadline to vote was midnight Thursday 9 June.

I registered to vote but haven't had any confirmation of that. Should I have?

Please call 0208 359 5577 to check, especially if you haven't had a polling card.

Can I still apply for a postal vote?

The postal vote deadline was the 8 June by 5pm. If you applied for a postal vote before the deadline, you cannot cancel or change your postal vote now

I haven’t received my postal vote. What should I do?

On the advice of the Electoral Commission, we started sending out postal votes on Wednesday 1 June so residents who have a permanent postal vote arrangement should have already received them. If this applies to you and you haven't received your postal vote, please call 0208 359 4111.

If you applied for a postal vote between 1 May – 8 June, your postal vote will be dispatched on 10 June by first class post. If you haven’t received your postal vote by Friday 17 June you can come to North London Business Park for a postal vote re-issue. I’ve previously applied for a postal vote – can I now change it to a proxy vote?

No, if you have a postal vote this cannot be changed after the postal vote deadline which was the 8 June 5pm.

Can I still apply for a proxy vote?

If you wish to apply for a proxy vote you can still apply, the deadline date for a proxy is the 15 June by 5pm

I haven’t received my proxy vote. What should I do?

If you have a permanent proxy vote arrangement, your proxy should have received the proxy polling card by now. If they haven’t, please call 0208 359 4111.The proxy poll cards for those who applied late are only sent out after applications close on 15 June.  

If you applied for a proxy vote recently and your proxy has not received the poll card by 20 June please call us on 020 8359 4111.

I’ve heard about the voting problems in Barnet on 5 May. Could that affect me in the referendum?

We have fully accepted the recommendations of the independent investigation into those issues and action has already been taken to put in place a series of checks and other safeguards to ensure our processes are sufficiently robust for the Referendum on 23 June. 

Who can vote in the referendum?

You can vote in the EU referendum if you're registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on 23 June 2016 and are:

• a British or Irish citizen living in the UK, or
• a Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has leave (permission) to remain in the UK or who does not require leave to remain in the UK, or
• a British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years.

I’m a citizen of another EU state (other than the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Malta). Can I vote in the referendum?

No, unless you have dual EU and UK nationality. The media has reported that across the UK some citizens of other EU countries living in the UK have been sent polling cards. Despite this, they are not entitled to vote.

What if I haven't received a polling card or I’ve lost it?

So long as you are registered, you do not need your polling card to vote, so if you have lost it, just go along to your polling station and give them your name and address. If you need to check whether you are on the register, please call our helpline on 020 8359 4111.
