ADHD support for parents and carers

CAMHS transformation funding is provided by NHS England to the CCG to deliver the CAMHS Transformation Plan and this has been used to commission parenting support for ADHD in 2018-2019 and 2019-20.

Barnet CAMHS Transformation Plan 2015-2020 outlines our joint priorities between health, social care, schools and other partners to improving children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing. The plan identifies key goals to achieve the transformation needed to ensure children, young people and families have access to support services. Barnet has no plans to reduce investment in emotional wellbeing and mental health support services.

We work together with a range of partners including:

  • CAMHS
  • Education
  • Public Health
  • the voluntary and community sector

This is to deliver support for families that have children with additional needs, including families with children that have ADHD.

Barnet CCG, Barnet Council and partners involved in CAMHS Transformation have developed new ways of delivering services so that CAMHS practitioners in schools are engaged with the wider support systems for children and families and that schools are better able to respond to the needs of children in the school setting.

We have secured additional funding for the next three years to provide extra capacity for Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) to deliver early intervention and ongoing help within 33 educational settings in the west of Barnet covering Edgware and parts of Colindale and Mill Hill.

To support delivery of the priorities, CAMHS transformation funding has been used by the CCG and the Council to commission parenting support for ADHD in 2018-2019 and 2019-20. ADDISS were commissioned by the Council on behalf of the CAMHS transformation partnership from June 2018 to August 2019 to deliver psycho-education courses (understanding ADHD) and 123 Magic Parenting courses.

We are working with Mencap from September 2019 to deliver ADHD support to families. Mencap will be holding
‘Time to Talk ADHD’ sessions for families from September 2019 and delivering a 6-week parenting course will include a psycho-education session. The course focuses on positive parenting approaches and practical strategies. The delivery and materials have been adapted specifically for families of children with ADHD.

ADDISS continue to be a valued community provider offering drop ins, advice and guidance and we are working closely with ADDISS to ensure families are signposted to other appropriate services.

Barnet Mencap support, advice and guidance

Barnet Mencap provide an information, advice and guidance service for families that include children with Autism, children with a Learning Disability and/ or ADHD. They also run parenting courses, and workshops for families including courses for ADHD. The next round of courses will be available from September 2019.

Unitas Youth Zone

Unitas offer a wide range of activities for children and young people in Barnet. All sessions are inclusive and the Sunday session is tailored to children and young people with additional needs. The annual membership fee is £5 and access to activities is 50p per visit.

SENDIASS

Barnet SENDIASS is a statutory service which offers free, confidential and impartial information, guidance advice and support for young people and parents/carers of children and young people from 0 to 25 years old with special educational needs around their education.

Early Help for children, young people and families

Barnet’s 0 to 19 Service provides help and support to families, children and young people up to the age of 19 (or 25 with a disability).

There are 3 hubs in the borough:

  • East Central:  based at Newstead Children’s Centre
  • West: based at Barnet and South Gate College – Colindale
  • South:  based at Parkfield Children’s Centre
