Leading in to winter, Barnet residents are being encouraged to visit their local doctors’ surgeries to have a health check.

NHS health checks are free health MOTs for patients aged 40-74 without any prior health conditions already known to their practitioner, although if a patient has any concerns about their health, they should always contact their GP.

Patients are able to have a NHS health check for free every five years at practices throughout Barnet, such as Page, Herbert, Grossmark and Harvard (PHGH).

Based at the Temple Fortune Health Centre, PHGH is top in Barnet for delivering NHS Health Checks with the practice completing 70 per cent more health checks than of any other practice in Barnet.

Councillor Helena Hart, Chairman of Barnet Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “I am delighted with the success of our public health campaign to increase the number of NHS Health Checks carried out in Barnet and in particular to the contribution and fine example set by PHGH in Temple Fortune and Nurse Sheba Kanaber.

“These NHS Health Checks are vitally important, both to improving health and to halting the progress of disease by early intervention and treatment. Last year in Barnet, the programme picked up 600 patients with elevated blood pressure; 1,500 patients with high cholesterol levels; 1,800 patients with two or more cardio-vascular risk factors and 68 patients with atrial fibrillation, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, or chronic kidney disease.

“Well done to everyone involved – I hope other practices take up the challenge that PHGH has set.
