Barnet Council has added ReciteMe to its website to help remove barriers that those with accessibility needs have when accessing information online.

The website now includes a range of accessibility and language support tools aimed at helping residents who may have a disability, learning difficulty, visual impairment, or if they speak English as a second language.

The toolbar on the council website offers various features, including screen reading functionality, multiple reading aids, customisable styling options, and an on-demand live translation feature that supports over 100 languages, including 65 texts to-speech and styling options.

Councillor Zahra Beg, Cabinet Member for Equalities & the Voluntary & Community Sector, said:

“Accessibility and inclusivity are top priorities for Barnet Council, and we’re committed to ensuring that all residents can access information and services in a way that best suits them.

“We care for people our places and the planet, and that means all people. Which is why we’re working with innovative technology such as this to make sure Barnet is a place where everyone can enjoy and receive equitable access to services when they need them.”

Ross Linnett, Recite Me’s Founder and CEO, commented: “It is important to provide an inclusive online experience, where everyone can use our digital world in a way in which best suits their needs. As more organisations provide accessibility tools online, those who face online barriers can access information and services hassle-free. The digital world must be accessible for all.”
