Discover Barnet and Small Business Saturday

We’re delighted to see Barnet’s much-loved local shops open their doors once again to welcome the safe return of their customers in time for the busy festive period.

Launching Saturday 5 December, Discover Barnet encourages residents to shop safely and shop local for all their festive shopping needs. The launch coincides with Small Business Saturday, a national campaign that champions independent businesses.

Barnet’s own Small Business Champion, Cllr Alex Prager, said: “When we support our local small businesses and keep our pounds close to home, Barnet’s businesses reinvest our support into the local economy and our communities. Let’s make sure their invaluable local services, local opportunities, and social interactions – not to mention their unique character and charm – remain at the heart of our high streets for years to come.”

Ursula, owner of The Flower Bank in New Barnet, said: “This year has been like no other. Retail through COVID-19 has been really badly damaged – so it’s even more important than ever to support your local shops. Shopping locally makes our community stronger, safer and a happier place to live.”

Brian, co-owner of Black Gull Books in East Finchley, said: “It’s important for people to shop locally because we live locally. And if we live locally we should connect locally. I think given what’s come in since last March, an unprecedented pandemic, has in its wake shown us what it is to be a community on the high street and why it’s necessary.”

How can I support local businesses?

As well as popping in to see them, there are many other ways you can support your favourite local shops:

  • Leave a positive review online
  • Choose local for your online shopping
  • Recommend your favourite local businesses to friends and family
  • Use the #DiscoverBarnet hashtag to tell everyone what you love about them
