Barnet Council has launched a £50,000 grant programme aimed at supporting the borough’s local business owners and entrepreneurs.

Five grants worth £10,000 each are available to fund business-building activities such as events, training sessions, internships, mentoring programmes and discount vouchers.

Grassroots groups including volunteer-led town teams, business associations and resident associations can bid for the funding to support businesses in their area. The grants are paid for by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Cllr Anne Clarke, Cabinet Member for Community Wealth Building, said: “Local businesses are at the heart of our thriving high streets and communities. We want to work with them to help them grow and create more jobs.

“Barnet is home to diverse communities, and we want to hear how those bidding for the funding have targeted business owners from under-represented groups so that entrepreneurs from all backgrounds have the support and resources they need to succeed.”

Applicants should say how their plans will benefit local businesses and how they have targeted under-represented business owners.

Funding bids must involve local businesses and be linked to one of Barnet’s main town centres:

  • Brent Street
  • Burnt Oak
  • Chipping Barnet
  • Colindale/The Hyde
  • Cricklewood
  • East Barnet
  • Edgware
  • East Finchley
  • Golders Green
  • Finchley Central
  • Mill Hill
  • Hendon Central
  • New Barnet
  • North Finchley
  • Whetstone
  • Temple Fortune

The deadline for submitting applications is 19 February.

Two free online information sessions about the initiative are being held on 18 January and 1 February.

There are more than 26,000 businesses in Barnet – the third-highest number of any borough in London – and the majority are small and medium-sized enterprises. The council has previously run competitive grant schemes, including for volunteer-led town teams and for businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
