The competition, which coincided with 70 years of the Finchley Youth Centre in East Finchley, was organised by the council’s Early Help 0-19 Service, and gave Barnet’s young residents the opportunity to enter the borough’s first poetry, photography and art competition for young people.

In total, it attracted more than 30 submissions across three age categories - 7-11 years, 12-15 years and 16–18 years (Up to 25 with additional needs). Each artist also provided a written description outlining what inspired them to create their imaginative pieces of work.

Four local judges attended the event on 23 November; Carolyn Pickles (Actor and writer), Tark Butler (Photographer, Friends of Finchley Youth theatre) Peter Hale (East Finchley Open Artists) and Mike Cole (Photographer – Archer Newspaper).

Comments from the judges included: “Impressive work – powerful and dynamic”; “amazing execution and wonderful idea”.

The event also included a performance from young talent Milli-Rose, from Rithmik Studio’s Rising Artists at Canada Villa, who sang to the audience before opening the awards.

All the entries were displayed at the Finchley Youth Centre as part of this year’s East Finchley Open Artists’ Winter Artists Fair 2018 where hundreds of people enjoyed a variety of stalls and art displays.

Councillor David Longstaff, Chairman of the Children, Education and Safeguarding Committee, said: “This competition highlighted just how talented these young artists and poets are. There were some tremendously creative and striking pieces of work on show and everyone who entered should feel extremely proud. Particular congratulations go to each of the winners – well done.”
