Emergency Works - Junction of A5 and Station Road
During planned general utility upgrade works at the junction of the A5 and Station Road, Edgware, a void under the road was discovered. Due to the nature of the void, we have had to shut the Southbound carriageway after the junction for safety reasons – introducing a contraflow system on the Northbound carriageway to minimise disruption in the area.
A Barnet Council spokesperson said:
“Council Officers have been awaiting completion of reports from various utility companies who have been carrying out integrity checks on their below ground network to ensure it has not been compromised - either causing the void or preventing the use of certain engineering techniques in its repair.
“In some cases, these investigations have required the use of specialist inspection teams further delaying their completion.
“The investigations are now complete, and we are proceeding with the design for the execution of the permanent repair to the void.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but due to the nature of the void and the proximity of the utilities network, we have been unable to implement a quick fix.
“We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption and resolve the issue and will be providing an update as soon as possible. We thank everyone affected for your continued patience.”

Following the completion of numerous investigations, work has now commenced to permanently repair the void on the A5 at the junction with Station Road, Edgware.
A Barnet Council spokesperson said:
“We are working to fully reopen the road as quickly as possible.
“Current traffic measures will remain in place to ensure the safe completion of the works.
“We would like to thank everyone affected for your continued patience while whilst we complete these emergency works.”

Emergency works at the junction of the A5 and Station Road, Edgware has been completed.
The southbound carriageway has now reopened and northbound back to two lanes.
